The Brain

I am the right brain. I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion. Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter. I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feet. I am movement. Vivid colors. I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas. I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel. I am everything I wanted to be.

2012 Mercedes Benz campaign

This particular drawing was one of my first multimedia projects. The entire premise behind it is that I had to learn how to adapt to lost materials or insufficient funds by using the things available to me.

I started it in January of 2016, but I still remember when I got this idea. When it was sketched out, I was still working at my old custodian job where I lived. I worked 2-10pm M-F and I carted a huge tote bag around with my schoolbooks and art supplies in it.

At my old job, I never really had time for anything because I was a full-time student with a full-time job, so I had to make time. Every break, I’d hide in the teachers lounge and either draw or read. And every day I’d keep pushing for even more. Art and school were my priorities, and since I was great at my job, I made sure to make time for all of it. So, in the process… I made The Brain.

The colors represent the creative side, while the blacks/browns represent the logical side.

Then, since I was working with what was available, I made sure to give it texture.

Since January, I didn’t have much time to work on it. Between start and finish, I ended up quitting my job and moving to a different state. As a result, I didn’t even finish this drawing until October. So in the end, it took me around a year to actually finish what I started, but it’s ended up becoming one of my favorites.
